School of Law's Edwina Higgins scoops student award

POPULAR law lecturer Edwina Higgins has been awarded for ‘Outstanding Innovation in Teaching’ by MMU students.

Edwina, who teaches on LLB Introduction to Law and Legal Technique and Reasoning, won more votes that any lecturer in the university in the category at the I Love My Lecturer Awards.

More than 1,000 students nominated academics in the inaugural awards, hosted by the Student Union.

Edwina, who is e-learning co-ordinator for the School of Law and a Senior Teaching and Learning Fellow, is renowned for giving an extra dimension or two to her law teaching.

Students said she “opened their eyes to the drama of the law” and “turned her classroom into a courtroom”. Another said she was “a genius”.

Collecting her award at a glittering ceremony attended by NUS incoming president Aaron Porter and Vice-Chancellor John Brooks, Edwina said she was “overwhelmed”, adding: “It’s good to get feedback, especially if its great feedback!”

Cath Little, who teaches Criminology, Gender and PPPL, was nominated for the ‘Best Personal Tutor’ Award.

The School of Law also picked up a nomination for Best Overall Department.
