The Bar Professional Training Course is the qualification required by those wishing to enter the legal profession as a barrister. Students on the BPTC at Manchester Metropolitan University benefit from a wealth of opportunities, facilities and support. Manchester is the second largest legal centre in the country so our students are well-placed to interact with the legal profession and with practitioners of legal skills in other sectors of employment. The city is also one of the most exciting commercial, cultural, leisure and sporting centres in Europe, presenting advantages for career opportunities both within the legal profession and in commercial or other settings.
The BPTC at MMU is a one-year full-time or two year part-time course, with a strong emphasis on highly interactive small group work which takes place in 'chambers' groups. It combines rigorous academic standards with practical application. The teaching staff are all qualified barristers. Feedback from student questionnaires consistently praises the staff for their approachability and supportiveness.
The School of Law has excellent links with members of the Bar and other professionals in the North West. Our strong links with the local Bar directly benefit our students through the Practitioner Mentor scheme which provides access to practising barristers in the region for advice in relation to both academic studies and future career paths.
inks between the Northern Circuit and MMU include the following benefits for our BPTC students:
The Bar Professional Training Course is a skills based course aimed at preparing a student for pupillage. There is a particular emphasis on advocacy training. However the skills learnt on the course are transferable to other areas of employment. A particular feature of the Manchester course is the close links it has with the Northern Circuit.
