Research: Entry Requirements & Application

Entry Requirements

The normal qualification required for entry on to a research degree is a first or second class honours degree in law or a related discipline. Direct entry to PhD is at the discretion of the Faculty Research Degrees Committee and normally requires a Masters degree in a discipline which is appropriate to the proposed research, which includes training in research methods and the execution of a research project.

Standard of English Language

If English is your second language; you must be able to show that you have a sufficiently high standard of English in order to follow the course of study. You must provide evidence of having reached the following grades:

  • GCSE, CPE or CAE grade C
  • IELTS 6.0
  • TOEFL 550 (or 213 Computer based)
  • LCCIEB EFB / EFC 2nd

Applications

Applications to the School of Law must include:

A short proposal (max 1500 words) of your proposed research. This should include:

  • Aims and objectives of your study
  • Background to the area you wish to study
  • Methods you will use to study this matter
  • References / bibliography including indicative reading
  • Your full CV including details of two academic referees we may contact. We do not wish to receive letters of support at the initial application stage
  • A supporting one page letter explaining why you wish to study in that area of law

Fees

Details of current and future fees for home and overseas postgraduate study by the full-time and part-time routes can be obtained from the Faculty Research Degrees website.

Studentships

We hope to provide one or two research studentships, which cover fees and provide a maintenance grant, each year to EU students. When they are available, these are advertised in the Educational Press and on the website. Students currently studying with us will be automatically sent details.
